John was a lamp that burned and gave light, and you chose for a time to enjoy his light. (John 5:35 NIV)
John the Baptist was the forerunner of the Messiah. He prepared the way for Jesus by proclaiming about His coming kingdom and preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins (see Luke 3:3-6). Although his life and ministry were unfortunately cut short, he left a lasting legacy. In Jesus’ own words, “John was a lamp that burned and gave light, and you chose for a time to enjoy his light” (John 5:35). John reminds me of the countless people who shine a bright light on our path, people we are blessed enough to have for a while.

We are called to shine the light of Jesus in our dark world. Like John, we’re to be a lamp that keeps burning and giving light. There are those will enjoy our light and those who won’t, but even they can’t extinguish it. That light will keep shining even after we are gone. One of my favourite quotes says, “There are some who bring a light so great to the world that even after they have gone, their light remains.” If there are – and I’m sure there are – people who have made your life a whole lot brighter and better – make sure you enjoy their light while it’s still burning.
