The Light Overcomes the Darkness

The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. (John 1:5 NIV)

Jesus, who came to be “the light of the world” (John 8:12), shined a light so bright that the darkness couldn’t overcome it. In fact, even after His enemies succeeded in getting Him killed, they worried that His light would continue to shine after He was gone. They went to Pilate and asked for His tomb to be guarded because they worried that He would come back again:

The next day, the one after Preparation Day, the chief priests and the Pharisees went to Pilate. “Sir,” they said, “we remember that while he was still alive that deceiver said, ‘After three days I will rise again.’ So give the order for the tomb to be made secure until the third day. Otherwise, his disciples may come and steal the body and tell the people that he has been raised from the dead. This last deception will be worse than the first.” “Take a guard,” Pilate answered. “Go, make the tomb as secure as you know how.” So they went and made the tomb secure by putting a seal on the stone and posting the guard. (Matthew 27:62-66)

But no order, guard or seal could keep the Light from overcoming the darkness. Listen to what happened on the third day: “There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it. His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men” (Matthew 28:2-4). No matter how dark the night might be, the Son eventually rises in the morning. Always remember that in the end, the light will overcome the darkness. There’s nothing that can keep you from rising again and shining His light in the world.
