God is Not in the Noise

Then he was told, “Go, stand on the mountain at attention before God. God will pass by.” A hurricane wind ripped through the mountains and shattered the rocks before God, but God wasn’t to be found in the wind; after the wind an earthquake, but God wasn’t in the earthquake; and after the earthquake fire, but God wasn’t in the fire; and after the fire a gentle and quiet whisper. When Elijah heard the quiet voice, he muffled his face with his great cloak, went to the mouth of the cave, and stood there. A quiet voice asked, “So Elijah, now tell me, what are you doing here?” (1 Kings 19:11-14 MSG)

The world is full of unnecessary noise. Those distractions that seem to scream louder and louder for our attention with each passing day; things that in the long run, will mean nothing at all. Yet that’s where we find ourselves and hope to find God too. Thankfully, that’s not where He is. Today’s Bible story is a wonderful reminder of the fact that we find God in the “gentle and quiet whisper.” He doesn’t shout to get our attention and we’re mistaken if we think that we’ll hear Him in the midst of the noise because we won’t. Although He is God and He demonstrates His power in mighty ways, His voice remains gentle and quiet. To hear Him, we must turn off the noise and listen. As we do that, we will hear him. In His presence, we will begin to see things from His perspective and continue to navigate through the noise of this world without letting it deafen us. In the Gospels we see that Jesus often withdrew to quiet places to hear from God, and He did. When we make the time and space to be alone with Him, He will speak to us too because God is not in the noise.
