Be Still and Watch

But you will not even need to fight. Take your positions; then stand still and watch the LORD’s victory. He is with you. (2 Chronices 20:17 NLT)

It’s that time of year again when many people will commit to some kind of a New Year resolution(s). This year, I feel God leading me towards making one too: to be still and watch Him work. It’s not a passive stance, but one in which I’m determined, now more than ever, to just take a step back and become more mindful of His plans and purposes. More of “I can’t wait to see how God is going to turn this around!” and less of “Why did God allow this to happen?” And let me tell you how peaceful and freeing it’s been to just let go and let God, not to mention, exciting because we know that no matter what happens, God wins in the end!

See this “resolution” isn’t new at all. Throughout the Bible we see God asking His people to do just that – to be still and watch Him go to work on their behalf. It didn’t mean that they didn’t have to do their part like going to war, as we see in today’s verse, but simply acknowledging that He is in control and to trust His purposes. So often we forget that being a Christian isn’t about us and what we can do. It’s about following Christ and believing in what He can do. If only we let Him fight our battles for us instead of trying to fight them ourselves, we would truly see Him deliver us from them, as He has so faithfully done in the Bible and in the lives of those who continue to trust Him. It is my hope that this year, we will re-consider the words of Scripture to just “stand still and watch the LORD’s victory” because He is with us.
