Jesus: The Light of My World

The people living in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned. (Isaiah 9:2 NIV)

“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12 NIV)

When Jesus was born, the Magi from the East followed a shining star that pointed them to Him. As He was about to reach the end of His life on earth, Jesus referred to Himself as “the light of the world.” Although His time in this world was short lived, Jesus never ceased to be the light that would guide the heart searching for God. The Magi are a wonderful example of those who find the way to the Saviour when they continue to follow His light no matter what.

For those of us who’ve had to navigate through some really dark times, we appreciate the light at the end of the tunnel. I know I have. That is why one of my favourite sayings of Jesus is, “I am the light of the world. Interestingly enough, this verse is found in the Gospel of John, which is infused in light. At this point in my life, Jesus isn’t just the light of the world, He is the light of my world. I don’t know where I would be without His light guiding me through the darkness, but I know that I need it. If you find yourself in a dark place right now, find hope in the One who still lights up the world.
