I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful,
I know that full well. (Psalm 139:14 NIV)
This Valentine’s Day, I’m going to challenge you to look for love within. For far too long, we’ve been led to look for love everywhere, except within ourselves. As a result, we have more men and women desperately searching for love in all the wrong places. A few years ago, I wrote about the need to love ourselves first because only then can we give it to – and receive it from – others. (You can read about it here.)

In order to love ourselves, we need to love God first. The greatest commandment starts with “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength,” and ends with “Love your neighbor as yourself” (Mark 12:30-31). It’s only when we love the One who made us that we can love the people He has created, including ourselves. The psalmist learned to love himself because he loved his Creator and saw himself the way he was seen – as “fearfully and wonderfully made” (Psalm 139:14). So this Valentine’s Day, learn to love yourself because true love begins from within.
