Quiet Confidence

After six days Jesus took with him Peter, James and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light. (Matthew 17:1-2 NIV)

Jesus, the Son of God, always knew who He was and where He was going. He didn’t need to prove anything to anyone. So true to His character, Jesus took three of His closest disciples on a high mountain in order to reveal His glory and destiny to them. Not to the whole world, not in public where He could be seen by everyone, but in a secluded place by a select few. And it’s there that His close circle of friends saw His glory and heard the voice from Heaven affirming His identity, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!” (Matthew 17:5). The only validation Jesus needed came from the One who knew Him best. It’s where He got His confidence from. His quiet confidence.

The Transfiguration wasn’t a showy display but a manifestation of who Jesus was on the inside. On the mountain where He often spent quiet time in seclusion and prayer, is also where His inner light shone through, “His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light” (v.2). Jesus is our perfect role model of what it means to be so rooted in our relationship with God that the only approval that counts is His. The best part about this kind of God-confidence is that it doesn’t require you to be loud or boisterous or attention seeking. Your calm presence and inner strength will point others to the One whose light lives on the inside of you.
