“Appoint a king to rule us, just like everybody else.”
(1 Samuel 8:6 MSG)
The Israelites were a chosen people. They were meant to stand out not fit in. Unfortunately, they decided to become “like everybody else” when they asked the prophet Samuel for a king just like the other nations around them (1 Samuel 8:6). So God gave them one, but also warned them about what the king would do to them (vv. 10-18).
But the Israelites are not the only copycats. Sadly, many Christians today carry a similar attitude when they decide to blend in with the people around them. They lose their unique purpose by imitating other people’s way of life. They forget that they’re not everybody else; they’re a special people called by a great God to shine His light in the world.
It’s about time that we become what we were meant to be – an original, not a copy.
