But when they said, “Give us a king to lead us,” this displeased Samuel; so he prayed to the Lord. And the Lord told him: “Listen to all that the people are saying to you; it is not you they have rejected, but they have rejected me as their king. As they have done from the day I brought them up out of Egypt until this day, forsaking me and serving other gods, so they are doing to you. Now listen to them; but warn them solemnly and let them know what the king who will reign over them will claim as his rights.” — 1 Samuel 8:7-9 (NIV)
Who is reigning over your heart today? It may not be a throne or a crown, but whatever we trust more than God has become our king. The Israelites wanted a human king so they could be like the surrounding nations (1 Samuel 8:5). What they truly desired wasn’t simply a different form of leadership—it was something that seemed more secure, more visible, and more like everyone else’s. In asking for a king, they rejected God as the One who had faithfully led, protected, and provided for them.
In our own discontent, we can find ourselves asking for something we think will finally make us feel complete, accepted, or secure. What once seemed enough no longer feels satisfying, and we begin looking to people, possessions, achievements, or relationships to fill the emptiness. Yet sometimes that “something more” is really a desire for something other than God.
Whenever something takes God’s rightful place in our hearts, we allow it to rule us instead. It may be success, approval, comfort, wealth, or even a relationship. Without realizing it, we can place those things on a pedestal, expecting them to give us what only God can provide.
The truth is, we’ve all been down that road. We’ve all chased something, believing it would bring lasting peace or happiness, only to discover that it couldn’t satisfy the deepest longings of our hearts. Sometimes, just as He did with the Israelites, God allows us to have what we’ve been pursuing—not to punish us, but to lovingly reveal that no person or possession can take His place.
In His grace, He uses those moments to draw us back to Himself. He reminds us that He alone is the King who will never fail us, the Shepherd who faithfully leads us, and the only One who can give us the lasting peace, joy, and security our hearts were created to find.

Prayer:
Lord, forgive me for the times I’ve looked to other people or things to give me what only You can provide. Help me to trust You completely and to keep You on the throne of my heart. Teach me to find my peace, joy, and security in You alone. Amen.
