Given From Heaven

To this John replied, “A person can receive only what is given them from heaven.”

(John 3:27 NIV)

A family member is very fond of this verse. According to her, John the Baptist didn’t preach much, but what he said that one time is noteworthy. When his disciples came to him and reported that Jesus was attracting a large following, John told them, “A person can receive only what is given them from heaven.” It’s a gentle reminder to all of us that no one can achieve anything unless God makes it happen. All of our attempts to succeed are in vain unless God Himself allows us to prosper. “Given from heaven.” Keep that in mind whenever you’re tempted to take matters into your own hands.

We only get what God gives us.
