“She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”
(Matthew 1:21 NIV)
The meaning of names fascinates me. In Bible times, names signified an individual’s character, function or destiny, and I believe they still do. When the birth of Jesus was foretold, the angel was specific about the meaning of Jesus’ name. He said that the baby would be named Jesus “because he will save his people from their sins,” and He did! When people called Jesus’ name, they were reminded of His purpose, and the same is true today. “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12).
Jesus lived up to His name when He died for our sins.
