Lay Down the Crown

At the same time the twenty-four elders knelt down before the one sitting on the throne. And as they worshiped the one who lives forever, they placed their crowns in front of the throne and said, “Our Lord and God, you are worthy to receive glory, honor, and power. You created all things, and by your decision they are and were created.”

(Revelation 4:10-11 CEV)

Whatever “crown,” whatever we’ve been rewarded or achieved, should be ultimately given back to the One who gave it to us. This is the picture that the apostle John paints for us in today’s passage. The twenty-four elders, who represent either the whole company of believers in heaven or exalted angelic order worshipping and serving God there, lay down their crowns before God’s throne as a way of acknowledging that He alone is worthy of ultimate praise and worship. Let’s follow their example and lay down our crowns before Him too. He is worthy.

Lay down your crown before God’s throne.
