Rediscovering the Christ of CHRISTmas

“He will bring back many of the people of Israel to the Lord their God. And he will go on before the Lord, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the parents to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous—to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”

(Luke 1:16-17 NIV)

Besides being overly commercialized, Christmas has come to mean just about anything but the birth of Christ. From an old man in a red suit to movies and songs that depict and sing about weather, food and relationships, is it any wonder that most people have lost the true meaning of the Reason for the season? And Christians haven’t done much to help either. Caught up in the hustle and bustle, we’ve easily succumbed to the world’s ideas of Christmas. But years ago, the angel of the Lord clearly laid out the job of the Lord’s messengers while speaking to Zechariah concerning the birth of his son, John – “to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.” There’s nothing wrong with indulging in this season’s activities, but let’s not forget the birthday Boy and why He came. We have a mission to point people’s hearts back to God as John did. Because when the decorations come down, the food is gobbled down and the presents unwrapped, the only thing that will remain is Jesus. So let’s rediscover the Christ of CHRISTmas and help others do the same.
