By now it was noon. The whole earth became dark, the darkness lasting three hours—a total blackout. (Luke 23:44 MSG)
One of Jesus’ “I Am” statements is, “I am the light of the world” (John 8:12 NIV). So as this Light hung on the cross about to die, the earth returned to its original state of total darkness (Genesis 1:2). After all, how can we expect to keep the light burning after we choose to extinguish it? Although Jesus remains the Light of the world, He will not shine where He is not welcomed. “Jesus once again addressed them: “I am the world’s Light. No one who follows me stumbles around in the darkness. I provide plenty of light to live in” (John 8:12 MSG). If we want to see the Light, we’ve got to follow the Light. So many people want to come out of the darkness but the only way out is to let the Light in. We can’t expect to see brighter days without Him. He is the Sonshine that we all need. Listen to today’s passage in the New International Version, “It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon, for the sun stopped shining” (Luke 23:44). The Son is the Light of life.
