Turn the Other Cheek

Don’t say, “I will get even for this wrong.” Wait for the LORD to handle the matter. (Proverbs 20:22 NLT)

Does the first part of the verse ring a bell? The Bible constantly reminds us not to have a retaliatory attitude. In Romans 12:19-21, Paul advises the recipients of his letter (who I imagine were dealing with a retaliatory attitude themselves) the following:

“Dear friends, never take revenge. Leave that to the righteous anger of God. For the Scriptures say, “I will take revenge; I will pay them back,” says the Lord. Instead, “If your enemies are hungry, feed them. If they are thirsty, give them something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals of shame on their heads.” Don’t let evil conquer you, but conquer evil by doing good.”’

A great advice that helped me overcome my own retaliatory attitude. Was it hard? Yes, but not impossible with God.

Vengeance is God’s right, not ours.
