His Majesty, King Jesus

She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”

(Matthew 1:21 NIV)

The world waited in anticipation as the British royals not only announced the gender, but also the name of their new family member. It seemed as though everyone had an idea of what they expected – or wished – the royal baby to be named. And most predictions turned out to be correct.

For ages, the Jews awaited the arrival of their king, the Messiah. When He came, He was given the name Jesus because “he will save His people from their sins” (Matthew 1:21). Not quite what the Jews were looking for. Yes, He would be a Saviour, but they expected Him to deliver them from Roman oppression and not necessarily from their sins. But God knew their real need. They needed to be saved from their sins, first and foremost.

Get to know the royal baby, who came to save you from your sins.
