“So if your hand or foot causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It’s better to enter eternal life with only one hand or one foot than to be thrown into eternal fire with both of your hands and feet. And if your eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It’s better to enter eternal life with only one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into the fire of hell.”
(Matthew 18:8-9 NLT)
Here’s an example of something Jesus said that’s hard to understand at first, until you do some research. Jesus often used hyperbole, an exaggerated statement, to drive His message home. In today’s passage, Jesus used hyperbole to teach about the necessity of dealing drastically with sin in order to break its grip on our lives. Now, more than ever, we seriously need to take Jesus’ words into consideration. Even though sin continues to take its toll on our world, it doesn’t mean that we should just let it sway us as well. With God’s help, we need to deal radically with sin in order to remove it from our lives.
Break sin’s grip on your life.
