Wives, respect and obey your husbands in the same way. Then the husbands who do not obey the word of God will want to know God. They will want to know God because their wives live good lives, even though they say nothing about God. They will see that you live holy lives and respect your husbands.
(1 Peter 3:1-2 WE)
I was once having coffee with a couple when the wife said something that sounded very shocking to me. We were talking about healthy marriages when she pointed to her ring finger and said, “Men are like a ring on your finger.” I couldn’t help but interrupt her, “No, it’s all about respecting each other.” “Yes, it’s all about respect,” agreed her husband who was sitting right there!
The Apostle Peter would have agreed too. In his first letter, he told wives to respect and obey their husbands and vice versa. I know men who have stopped demanding or expecting respect from their wives, which is not what God intends. For a long time, I used to admire men who showed their wives respect, even though they were not getting it back, but now I get upset whenever I see men not standing up for themselves when they’re being disrespected by their wives. I no longer pity such men because I believe that they need to start taking their position as head of the family more seriously and not hide from their responsibility. Jesus never disrespected people. When we respect one another we reflect His character and point others to Him.
“Ladies, your husband doesn’t need you to love him as much as he needs you to respect him. To respect your husband is to hold him in high esteem and honor.”
