Common Sense

I have better understanding and deeper insight than all my teachers, because Your testimonies are my meditation.

(Psalm 119:99 AMP)

One of my high school teachers used to refer to common sense as if it were the answer to everything. As an adult, who is constantly meeting and getting to know people, I now understand and agree with my teacher. Many problems in life can be solved if people used common sense, but sadly, it’s not so common, is it? So how do we get it? Psalm 119, which is a devotional on the Word of God, provides the answer. The psalmist acknowledged, “I have better understanding and deeper insight than all my teachers, because Your testimonies are my meditation” (Psalm 119:99). The Bible, not human teachers, gives us insight. Thinking about God’s Word offers us sound judgment in practical matters. As one Bible commentator put it, “A good man carries his Bible with him, if not in his hands, yet in his head and in his heart.” Are you in need of common sense today? Meditate on His Word and you’ll have better understanding and deeper insight than all your teachers.

Thinking about God’s Word gives us wisdom to handle everyday matters.
