As the deer longs for streams of water, so I long for you, O God.
(Psalm 42:1 NLT)
Just as the life of the deer depends on water, our lives depend on God. Sadly, many people try to satisfy their deep thirst with other things, only to realize that God is the only One who can do that. One of my favourite sayings by St. Augustine of Hippo expresses this truth. After his long search, Augustine finally found his satisfaction in God and confessed, “You have made us for yourself, Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in you.” How true! The Apostle Peter also expressed a similar sentiment. When asked if he would walk away from Jesus, he said to Him, “Lord, there is no one else that we can go to! Your words give eternal life” (John 6:68 CEV). Once you’ve known God, there can be no substitute, and if you haven’t yet, I encourage you to do so. Only then will your thirst be quenched.
Only God can quench our deep thirst.
