When the Roman officer who stood facing him saw how he had died, he exclaimed, “This man truly was the Son of God!” (Mark 15:39 NLT)
After witnessing the way Jesus died, it didn’t take long for the Roman officer, a pagan, to realize that Jesus is truly the Son of God. He had never seen anything quite like it. Darkness covered the land for three hours, the earth shook, the dead rose again…No, there was no one else like this Man. Even the criminals beside Him stood in sharp contrast. Because He wasn’t just any man and He was certainly not a criminal, although He became a man and bore our sins in His body on the tree (1 Peter 2:24). Sadly, it takes years for others to come to the same realization. Lord, open the eyes of our hearts so that we, too, might see the Son of God hanging on the cross.
