She will bear a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.”
(Matthew 1:21 MEV)
I was at the mall a few years ago when I ran into an old friend from elementary school. Many years had passed but I still remembered her name and she remembered mine. I told the lady who was doing my make up that the reason I could still remember my friend’s name was because she was the sweetest and kindest girl in class. You could never forget the name of a person like that.
Jesus is a name no one could forget either. When Jesus healed a sick man who had been ill for thirty-eight years, the Jewish leaders wanted to know who had done it, especially since it was the Sabbath. The Bible is clear that at first, the man who had been healed didn’t know who had healed him, but when he later met Jesus in the temple, “The man went back and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well” (see John 5:12-15 MSG). The man could never forget the Name of the One who had come to make him whole.
When the angel appeared to Joseph in a dream, he told him to name Mary’s baby Jesus because “He will save His people from their sins” (Matthew 1:21), which He did. Now that’s a Name that will continue to go down in history and one that I will always be thankful for.
