Jakin and Boaz

He erected the pillars at the portico of the temple. The pillar to the south he named Jakin and the one to the north Boaz.

(1 Kings 7:21 NIV)

While reading about the construction of the first Jerusalem temple, I was drawn to the names of the two pillars that were erected at the portico of the temple – Jakin and Boaz. Jakin means, “He establishes,” and Boaz, “in Him is strength.” The names that King Solomon gave the pillars were emblematic of the fact that God is the One who establishes and gives strength. The names were a wonderful reminder to the ancient Israelites – and to us today – that God, who begins something great in our lives, is also the One who gives us strength to finish it.

God establishes the work of our hands and strengthens us to carry it out.
