Coffee Dates With Marlene

There are friends who are friends, and there is a friend that is closer than a brother.

(Proverbs 18:24 ABIPE)

I’ve been blessed with many good friends over the years, but there’s only one that I’ve stayed in touch with, or who has rather, stayed in touch with me – Marlene. We’ve been good friends for twenty years. We went to high school and university together (in fact, had the same classes together) and pursued the same career – teaching. We were so close and inseparable that people used to think we were actually sisters. When we temporarily parted ways when she went to a different faculty of education, we still found ways to connect. But when she got engaged, I honestly didn’t think we were going to keep in touch after she got married. However, to my surprise, Marlene continued to connect with me. Now that she is a busy wife, mother and teacher, she still takes the time to arrange what she calls our “coffee dates” for each month. And because she takes the time to meet with me, I look forward to our time together.

My friendship with Marlene reminds me of the kind of friendship that God longs with each one of us. He desires to be our long time friend. He wants to be so close to us that when people look at us they can tell that we are part of His family. Almighty God invites us to coffee dates with Him and looks forward to spending time with us. Are you ready to make that commitment to Him, to spend time alone with Him, pour your heart out to Him, every day? He is waiting.

A coffee date with God is a date we wouldn’t want to miss.
